SXSW aftermath

I don’t really understand why every blog feels the need to deliver a rant complaining about the presence of crowds/corporate sponsors/Kanye West. If you went and you didn’t go to the smaller venues to see new bands, you have no one to blame but yourself. I made a list of new bands to see, saw them and thoroughly enjoyed my week. It’s a big city, guys.

Would SXSW be better for everyone involved (except SXSW’s wallets, the crux of the problem) if ringers like the Foo Fighters and the Strokes weren’t brought in basically to get themselves an extra photo in SPIN? Yes, obviously. Is the rest of SXSW still, you know, what SXSW is supposed to be? Yes. SXSW is a microcosm of indie rock at large: swamped by mainstream fans who only care about new bands if they’re Pitchfork-approved; swamped by unbearably mediocre new bands who only earn notice through blogger content desperation. It’s a bad situation. But, as always, there’s plenty to like — it’s easier to hear if you’re not whining.
