Your post on Warpaint & Odd Future is really interesting. I’ve been noticing differences in the style of album reviews depending on the gender of the musician - women’s looks seem exceptionally important in music.
The other reality is nobody gets to be a nationally successful musician of either gender without being reasonably good-looking. That’s not to say it’s a strike against someone like Annie Clark or Sufjan Stevens for being extraordinarily handsome, but it certainly doesn’t hurt them get publicity or concert attendees. That’s just History of Rock 101, though. (Also, History of Everything 101.)
I would guess men tend not to talk about other men’s appearances outside of unignorable cases like Bowie for no-homo purposes, but maybe times are changing. Also, men think about the way women look all the time, no matter what.

If they do talk about men’s image, it’s usually in regardness to “coolness” and “swagger”. Whereas women are ethereal and stunning. But I completely agree. Part of the appeal is not just that they play music, but that they’re incredibly attractive.
