Brief thought on uniqueness

jakec:

But I do think the idea of rebelliousness was perverted almost immediately by the image of the rebel and then continuously perverted until to be a rebel meant being a destructive and sullen piece of shit, and obviously everyone who proclaims themselves a rebel now is completely naive. That reactionary aspect does not account for the fact that sometimes popular things are good and popular decisions are smart.

I would take you a step beyond here and say that popularity ought to be totally irrelevant in the personal decision-making process, outside of making decisions unpopular enough in polite society to get yourself thrown in jail or kicked out of a movie theater or whatever. “Through being cool!” - The Saves the Days

Being a rebel (or often, an Internet hipster) seems to require a distinct lack of concern for the feelings of other people, another aspect that’s worrisome. (Because having feelings isn’t cool.)

I guess what I’m trying to spell out is the difference between actual uniqueness, which you have by virtue of being alive, and apparent uniqueness, which you have to work for and generally involves copying someone else and spending a lot of money.
