lafontusa: For a lot of people — mostly, those coming to this legendary record for the first time now or in the future — the Beach Boys “Smile Sessions” compilation will be the definitive version of the lost album “Smile,” the visionary collaboration between Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks recorded in 1966… Can somebody make Greg pop critic of the Anywhere Times already

It is both delusional and stupid to think that clothes don’t really matter and we should all wear whatever we want. Most people don’t take clothing seriously enough, but whether we should or not, clothes do talk to us and we make decisions based on people’s appearances. On the other hand, there are people, particularly in the fashion industry, who take clothing too seriously....

Since its 2003 release, Tommy Wiseau’s cinematic opus The Room has become our generation’s answer to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Entertainment Weekly called it the “Citizen Kane of bad movies”; the inscrutable Wiseau, who starred, scripted, directed and produced the film, has been hailed as a “genius-savant” by Salon; there may yet be a national plastic shortage from the countless spoons...

Has 'Indie' Become 'Adult Contemporary'? →
nprmusic: Dad rock, ‘NPR Muzak’ and the phenomenon of knee-jerk reactions to a genre growing up (or old?). I’ll take this opportunity to note that Wilco and Feist are both major-label artists and have always been, though “third-tier Warners act that can’t get played on KISS-FM” is probably a less hip description of them than “indie,” huh? (Wilco starting...
Sometimes I think we spend so much time thinking about endless tangentia that we don’t think enough about 1) What do we like? 2) Why? Why would other people like it? What is it trying to say? 3) Cool. What else do we like? Talking about whether or not Wilco makes “adult contemporary” music in 2011, after 20 years of Jeff Tweedy writing country songs, is like reading those...

One more thought about Coldplay
There is probably no successful rock band with fewer ideas. Even their great first record is a pure rewrite of Bends b-sides. They’d do a lot better if they’d just bring in ghostwriters (though, maybe they already are?) or hole up in a basement and make a record in a week.
The VV's Coldplay defense →
It is a horrific statement about 2011 music listening that this is a real article trying to convince readers that a popular band is reasonably competent and it is O.K. to like them or not like them or whatever That said, Coldplay does have actual personality issues — if you can tell me anything distinctive about a single member of the band, please do! — and their Suffering Artists Who...

This Beyonce record is spectacular. It’ll probably be on my top 10. I can’t believe it came out on a major label in 2011. Like, is “I Miss You” secretly the best Burial song?

marathonpacks: “Over the past couple of years, YouTube has grown into a lucrative machine for record labels. Popular videos – those that generate hits in the millions – can be festooned with ads, and YouTube shares that revenue with the copyright holders. Ryan’s never mean to musicians so I’m assuming this is sorta tongue in cheek? Nevertheless!
What would be the real-world equivalent of “I don’t own this, but?” Isn’t this basically like stealing movie reels from a theater and selling tickets to a screening in your backyard, pretty much? I assume people append it to every YouTube video because they see it on every other YouTube video and assume it’s legalese, but it baffles me every time.
