The debate over the value of music and those who make it rages on… While Radiohead famously tested the extent to which fans would value digital music via their 2007 pay-what-you-want In Rainbows release and Jack White recently took to eBay, allowing the free market to decide the price of limited vinyl, Godfather director/wine baron Francis Ford Coppola isn’t looking to our current...

The Hipster Runoff article about the... →
Both incredible/accurate and, as tongue-in-cheek as it is, unintentionally revealing re: Carles’ own status as an alt-bro who got into indie via electronic music/hypem/blogs in the wake of the Great Paradigm Shift of 2004.
The simple explanation for the Decemberists’ rise: they kept putting out reasonably good albums, they’re great live (a key), and their sales and increased...

"Fake Authenticity" for sale →
This is about Levi’s Jeans and Brooks Brothers collaborating for a “verblen” good (I learned a new word!), but it could just as easily be about indie-rock. (The moral: everything is authentic, get over yourself.)

When I wrote this earlier I was astonished to learn that the Decemberists had managed to sell nearly five times as many copies of their new album in its first week than their previous record in its first week. Also, 65% of the units sold were digital albums, and Amazon was selling it for $3.99, which has to account for a pretty huge chunk of the overall sales....

Brief thoughts on O.G. Said the Gramophone's... →
1) The state of the blogosphere-as-filter is embarrassing. It has become an infinite number of blogs “written” by an infinite number of monkeys receiving an infinite number of PR e-mails. The hunt for the next big thing has become a daily harvest of hundreds of next embarrassingly small things. In earlier days, music bloggers might’ve harbored the desire to go on to become a...

It feels really silly to me to use the phrase “[band’s] greatest strength has always been…” for a band we’ve collectively known about for like, six months

Anonymous asked: My stray thoughts.
The fact that he (Johnny) left his keys in the car has to mean something. Either he was walking away from his car to commit suicide, or he is simply walking away from the totality of his former celebrity life, (as represented by the car), and is now ready to devote most of his energy to the task of being a real father to Cleo, who he obviously adores. I prefer...

Nitsuh Abebe's article about Tennis →
Nitsuh pulls his punches here (just once, guy, hit somebody in the face!) and I left this commentary out of my review yesterday because the album’s lyrics are basically superfluous, but for those who dig deep enough into them, what could be more bourgeoisie and offensive than a white couple singing about cruising around on a boat through the filter of lo-fi garage rock, a genre that used to...

Sort of disagree — I think the question is, “This is beautiful — but is it right for me?” Clothing should be self-expression, so the look of the moment or even a classic piece that...

House Speaker John Boehner said Republicans will ask congressional committees to come up with “common-sense reforms” that will widen coverage while bringing down costs, but told reporters no “artificial deadlines” were needed.
“Instead, we’ll go with the natural deadline of ‘never,’” he said, smoking an entire pack of cigarettes and...

headliners who suck = leave early, skip traffic, get drunk at your hotel
We skipped two of the three headliners last year, beat all the traffic, got back to where we were staying in 15 minutes. It was great. Will probably do the exact same thing this year - not worth sitting in a parking lot for 90 minutes. (But Jay-Z was.)

I love that you can get literally thousands of views on a post, get a mere two or three sincere, thoughtful responses and then get a “Slow news day? WTF is this” comment. Sorry I reached through your computer, forced you to Google “Starbucks” and made you click on my story, dude. Sigh…
Simon Reynolds II →
That said, I don’t think the N-word really has much to do with all the ’80s ghosts haunting this music. From YouTube to sharity blogs, the Internet is an ever-expanding data sea, and these young musicians are really explorers, voyaging into the past and diving for pearls.
I agree with this 100%. When I interviewed Toro Y Moi, he was less concerned with revisiting his childhood...

– (via perpetua)
I don’t think Simon Reynolds’ thoughts on live performances are accurate at all, at least not in L.A., where every Internet buzz band sells out their shows. While this may not translate to record sales (hello, Ariel Pink), live music is very much at the forefront of being...

"The Social Network"/awards season
Look, this is a really good movie — great script, excellent acting and a zeitgeist-y topic — but it’s not a great movie. I think the right word here is “workmanlike” — it executes its story and nothing more.
The problem is it focuses on the wrong end of the story, the court battle over who invented Facebook (who cares?), instead of the enormous social and...
I'm just saying
It’s going to be incredibly funny watching the Iron & Wine reviews pour in as critic after critic strenuously attempts to avoid the phrase “influenced by Dave Matthews Band.” (A good thing!)
