The Daily Bruin Profiles UCLA Alums Local Natives →
Note: The Daily Bruin has an arbitrary three-source rule that didn’t apply to A&E profiles back when I was running things, but is apparently in force now, leading to this: Fans of Local Natives can also be found at UCLA. Third-year art history student Melissa Liu recalls her fondness for the band and the originality of its music. “They have a different sound, I like the fact that...

Marc's Pipettes Review
Haven’t heard the record but judging by the singles, seems like he’s on-point — especially on the switch from subversively using the girl-group genre to espouse girl power to embracing Best Coast-esque dependence. However: no contrast with/mention of the new, superior projects by previous members Rosay and RiotBecki? No mention of the fact that Gwenno wasn’t even an...

Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke at Glastonbury...
twentyfourbit: Though part of me was impressed that few among thousands of lucky attendees at last weekend’s surprise Glastonbury set by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood rushed to their laptops with sub-par footage from the event, my fanboy/can’t-afford-a-plane-ticket side couldn’t wait to catch a glimpse of the 9-song set (Greenwood joins in for the last 6). An interesting clip shot...

Rawktumblr: Altered Zones Pros/Cons →
therichgirlsareweeping: * Genuinely weird music that, importantly, isn’t looking for more promo gets further co-opted by the blogosphere sub-mainstream hive-mind: CON Um. Does anyone besides me feel truly unsettled by this statement? I mean, I’m sure this will lead to a discussion of poseurs and “trying too hard.” But here’s the thing: 1) Most bands want people to hear their music. Really, I...

Altered Zones Pros/Cons
* Pitchfork displaces some of the irrational ire against them by bringing in fresh, pre-existing brands in a new website, shining a bigger spotlight on “outsider” music without necessarily giving it the divisive tag of a Pitchfork endorsement: PRO * This will probably just create as much backlash as goodwill, though: CON * Cool bloggers presumably make a few bucks, get more credit...

thirtydollarproject: rawkblog: Unleash the fury, 1000timesyes! Honestly, everyone is probably more excited that there’s a new way to direct snark towards Pitchfork than they are about all of the potentially cool things that can emerge from having these bloggers neatly gathered in one place. I’m glad to see that Weingarten pointed out that it is, “a new sister site that you will say you...

NYT Reviews That NYC Wavves Show →
Probably too inside-baseball to talk about Pitchfork’s aggressive/obsessive early Wavves news coverage, their damning take on the “meltdown” and the crushing embarrassment of the apology interview Nathan did with them directly after, but I wonder if Caramanica actually knows that when Nathan says “the Internet” drove him to a breakdown, that it was largely a euphemism...

"Mean Girls" Addendum
In 2004, Lindsay Lohan was the biggest, and arguably the most talented and charismatic, star in Mean Girls. How things change: In the last six years, Rachel McAdams has become an acting darling and played leading lady to Robert Downey Jr.; Amanda Seyfried is single-handedly carrying romantic dramas, something Robert Twilight Saga Pattinson can’t do (!!!) (Letters to Juliet grossed $50M to...

Gawker: The American Apparel Dress Code →
Assuming this is real, it’s basically nuts: American Apparel seems to be shifting focus entirely from Madonna-as-icon to dorky 1980s Harvard. Converse shoes are banned, as are visible piercings and tattoos. Really? Now, AA is a company flailing about financially and widely reported as being run by schmucks — but does this speak to a larger trend re: youth culture/hipster style? Or is...

The highlight of my Playboy Mansion trip
In the shuttle back to civilization, the non sequitor exclamation, “She’s 34!” (With the killer follow-up, “She’s 32!”) Anna Faris was not in the vehicle. Pretty surreal experience, though as far as sheer, unfettered hedonism goes, Halloween at UCSB remains the high-water mark for me.

From The Music Industry To My Inbox
Dear DAVID , I’ve received hundreds of e-mails enthusiastically reacting to my “call to action” at the National Association of Recording Merchandisers convention last month.  The music business is facing huge challenges from piracy and theft. Never before in American history has an entire industry been so decimated by illegal behavior.  Yet the government...

This Pitchfork Shins/James Mercer Interview →
Grievances: 1) This is Tom Breihan’s lede: “James Mercer is the frontman of the Shins and Broken Bells.” Also, Frosted Flakes is a brand of breakfast cereal. Jesus Christ. 2) James Mercer is a disappointing interview subject, which is no surprise, but I am surprised that Breihan — usually a pretty good interviewer — didn’t push him a little harder on the...

believing the hype →
maura: the earthy taste of the signature dish at umami burger — which combines beef, roasted tomato, mushroom, a cheese crisp, griddled onions, and a mystery ‘sixth flavor’ that may be the bun or may be something else — is absolutely spellbinding. i kind of want to go back there for another go at it, even though that sort of misses the point of being somewhere different for a limited time. mmm. ...

Fidelity
We were listening to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in the car last night and, gripped with the inability to believe that a Toyota Corolla had the sound system necessary to coax such vivid life out of even arguably the 2000s’ best mixed/produced album, I realized we were listening to an actual CD. It sounded so fucking good. Still waiting optimistically for the day when someone makes a 1TB...

2010 Music Blogging, Continued
deadasdigital said: I don’t know how depressing it is. That’s obviously starting a blog from the viewpoint of making a living from it. While that’s fine, there’s still plenty of blogs without that ideal to whom sharing good music is very much the #1 priority. If all someone...

jason@indieshuffle CommentTime4 days ago The point is to maintain/grow traffic levels. Having a day go by in which I don’t put up something new means that I’m going to see a drop in traffic. The main incentive in keeping traffic levels constant/increasing is obviously for ad revenue. Further, about half of our content is original — and the goal is to grow that number....
